The Tarnished Saber
by A. D. Juarez
The Tarnished Saber is a riveting account of the life and times of Maj. Azor Howett Nickerson, native of Ohio, a Civil War officer and Indian fighter. Prominent in Army circles of the time, his life involved a personal scandal that carried over into his professional life. Based on records of the time, some of which are still sealed, the author carries us on a journey through Azor's military life, his campaigns in the West, his rejection of wife and family for a mistress, and the intrigues which resulted in his violating the code of conduct for "an officer and a gentleman". Hunted by Pinkertons, and harassed by the military, Azor fights the system but "in the end . . . became a tragic figure who relinquished his position in history for the woman he loved." This illustrated history, the first publication by Mr. Juarez (a retired officer), is a good read, and one published with pride by NFA.
